The VBAClient can be used as a StatViewer, where you can see the progress of individual players. It can be a useful tool if you're interested in fantasy basket. Using the program as a StatViewer and receiving stats is free of charge (and always will be), but as it is intended that a high percentage of the clients also participate in one or more "VBA" leagues, those users will have precedence.
You can also participate in keeper-leagues via the VBAClient. This service is free of charge in the "beta-season" 2004/2005, but will most likely cost between 15 and 20 USD/EUR in the following seasons (that is 15-20 per year). For this amount you can run up to 5 teams in different leagues (number of teams subject to change).
